United Way: Strengthening Community Resiliency in Ross County

A resilient community is one where everyone can access help when they need it most.
Unexpected crises—like job loss, illness, natural disasters, or family emergencies—can overwhelm individuals and families. United Way of Ross County is committed to making sure no one faces these challenges alone.

Our Vision

Ross County will be a community where every person can find support, resources, and hope during times of need.

Our Goal

To increase awareness of available resources and ensure residents can easily connect with services that promote stability, recovery, and long-term well-being.

Our Strategy

Helping individuals and families navigate difficult times starts with making information and assistance accessible to all. We work to:

1.) Connect people to help 24/7 through United Way 2-1-1, a free and confidential service that links callers to community resources, including food, housing, health care, crisis intervention, and more.

2.) Promote awareness of 2-1-1 so everyone knows where to turn in times of uncertainty or hardship.

3.) Strengthen partnerships with local nonprofits, government agencies, and service providers to coordinate support and fill gaps in essential services.

3.) Invest in programs that help residents prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies, building resilience at both individual and community levels.

4.) By empowering people with information, resources, and support, United Way of Ross County is helping our community face challenges with strength and confidence.

Dolly Parton's Imagination Imagination Library

of Ross County & Ohio Governor's Imagination Library

"Nearly 60% of Ohio children who show up to school are NOT ready to succeed in Kindergarten, and those who have not developed some basic literacy skills before entering school are 3 to 4 times more likely to drop out in later years." (Ohio Department of Education, 2016).

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library is a FREE program that provides age-appropriate books each month to enrolled Ross County children from birth to age 5. The program promotes improving childhood literacy rates and Kindergarten readiness and currently has nearly 3,000 Ross County children enrolled.

"New research at the 2017 Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting shows that reading books with a child beginning in early infancy can boost vocabulary and reading skills four years later, before the start of elementary school." (Early Reading Matters: Long-term Impacts of Shared Bookreading with Infants and Toddlers on Language and Literacy Outcomes Abstract to be presented May 8, 2017 the 2017 Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting.)

To register a child, click here or contact the United Way of Ross County office at 740-773-3280. It takes approximately 6-8 weeks after registration for the first book to arrive.

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library is funded by donations from Kenworth employees, grants from Chillicothe Kiwanis, and many generous donors throughout Ross County. The United Way of Ross County's investment in Dolly Parton's Imagination Library is $48,000.

United Way: Helping people achieve financial stability and independence

Steady employment with sufficient income is the basis for individual and family financial stability. For many, wages have not kept pace with rising costs for housing, food, health care, and education. Many in our community work low-paying jobs without basic health and retirement benefits, or the ability to survive a financial emergency.

Our Vision

Ross County residents will have the skills, tools, and support they need to be financially stable and independent.

Our Goal

To empower individuals and families by providing access to free tax preparation services and financial education. Our goal is to help people maximize their income, understand their finances, and make informed decisions that lead to greater financial security.

Our Strategy

Through our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, we offer free, professional tax preparation to low- and moderate-income residents of Ross County. VITA helps people:

Claim every credit and deduction they are eligible for, including the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit.

1.) Avoid the high costs of paid tax preparation services.

2.) Receive refunds that can be used to pay bills, reduce debt, or build savings.

3.) Learn about budgeting, saving, and other essential financial skills during the tax preparation process.

By combining free tax assistance with community education, United Way of Ross County is helping people keep more of what they earn, plan for the future, and build a foundation of financial stability.
